How to Use MSCONFIG

The Microsoft System Configuration utility (MSCONFIG) applies to all versions of Windows (TBC).

 

This document describes how MSCONFIG can be used to temporarily disable services and applications:

Step 1: Start MSCONFIG

Click START, then RUN, and type MSCONFIG:

 

 

Click on OK to launch MSCONFIG.

Step 2: MSCONFIG User Interface (General tab)

The System Configuration Utility starts and opens at the GENERAL tab:

 

Step3: MSCONFIG Services tab

 

Select the SERVICES Tab:

 

 

Check “Hide all Microsoft Services” to list only non-MS services:

 

 

Click on DISABLE ALL to disable non-MS services at startup:

 

 

Disabled services will not start after reboot.

Step 4: MSCONFIG Startup tab

Advance to the STARTUP tab.  This lists all applications that normally start at boot time:

 

 

Click on DISABLE ALL to prevent listed applications starting at boot time:

 

 

No applications will now start when the system reboots.

Notes:

 

  1. Click on OK to save the configuration, and select a system restart option.  The system will then reboot without the disabled services and applications.

 

  1. You can also MSCONFIG to disable individual services or applications as required.

 

  1. Run MSCONFIG again to reinstate services and applications.
